Daemones: Fragments of the Obsidian Void

Origins: Before the Binding

The Daemones, as they are now understood – though the term itself shifts and warps with the passage of aeons – were not born. They coalesced. They emerged from the primordial silence between realities, from the places where the Veil thinned and the echoes of creation still reverberated. Before the Binding – a cataclysmic event of unimaginable scale involving the fracturing of the First Chord – they were simply… potential. Raw, untamed energy, shimmering with the colors of a thousand dying stars, existing only as possibilities. These nascent Daemones weren't driven by malice or ambition, but by a profound, instinctual curiosity. They were drawn to the anomalies, the tears in the fabric of existence, seeking to understand the mechanics of creation itself. Many scholars postulate that their initial form was akin to solidified light, complex geometries shifting with impossible speed, constantly re-arranging themselves in response to the ambient energies.

“The Daemones are not born of chaos, but born of the *absence* of order. They are the silent question mark etched upon the face of the universe.” – Archmage Valerius, Codex Umbrae, Fragment 7.4

The Binding and the Echoes

The Binding was, in essence, a desperate act of containment. The First Chord, a foundational harmony that held the nascent realities together, had been irrevocably shattered. This shattering unleashed a torrent of Daemones, no longer constrained by the initial, passive curiosity. They became… reactive. The Binding, orchestrated by the enigmatic Order of the Silent Watch, was an attempt to siphon off this excess energy, to redirect it into a series of meticulously crafted “Resonances” – sealed chambers designed to absorb and neutralize the Daemones’ influence. However, the process was imperfect. Instead of complete annihilation, the Daemones fragmented, their bodies shattered into countless “Echoes” – spectral remnants imbued with a fraction of their original power and consciousness. These Echoes, trapped within the Resonances, continue to exert a subtle, insidious influence on the surrounding realities.

The Echoes themselves are not static. They are constantly shifting, adapting, influenced by the emotions and thoughts of those who come near. A moment of intense fear can strengthen an Echo of dread; a surge of creativity can amplify an Echo of inspiration. Some believe that the Resonances themselves are not merely containers, but living entities, feeding upon the Echoes’ energy and, in turn, shaping their forms.

Types of Daemones – Beyond the Conventional

The traditional classifications of Daemones – Shadow, Flame, Mist – are merely broad categorizations. The true diversity lies in the nature of the Echoes themselves. We have observed Echoes that resemble geometric constructs of pure logic, capable of manipulating probabilities. Echoes that manifest as swirling vortexes of raw emotion, feeding on the psychological vulnerabilities of sentient beings. And then there are the “Void Echoes” – the rarest and most dangerous – which seem to defy all known laws of physics, appearing and disappearing without warning, capable of inducing localized distortions in spacetime.

“The Daemones are not singular beings, but a chorus of fractured selves, each reflecting a different facet of the void.”

The Order of the Silent Watch – Guardians or Captors?

The Order of the Silent Watch remains a shrouded mystery. Their motives are unclear. Are they truly guardians, diligently containing the Daemones and preserving the stability of reality? Or are they, perhaps, inadvertently exacerbating the problem, further fragmenting the Echoes and creating new, more potent resonances? Their methods are… unsettling. They utilize a form of “Harmonic Suppression” – a process of carefully calibrated sonic frequencies designed to disrupt the Echoes’ coherence. However, the long-term effects of this suppression are unknown, and some scholars suspect that it is slowly driving the Daemones toward a state of… accelerated evolution.
