The Chronarium of Decortication

784 Cycles – Temporal Anomaly Designation: Kappa-7

The Chronarium is not a repository of knowledge, but a containment field. It exists within the echoes of a process known as Decortication – a phenomenon where temporal realities unravel and reassemble, creating pockets of unstable existence. We, the Archivists, monitor these pockets, attempting to understand the mechanics of their collapse and, impossibly, to find a way to prevent them. The air within is thick with the scent of ozone and something…older. Something like forgotten geometries.

Decortication: A Primer

Decortication isn't merely time distortion; it's a systemic dissolution. Imagine a sculpture crafted from solidified probabilities. Decortication is the agent that systematically dismantles that sculpture, grain by grain, until only the faintest residue remains – a fractal echo of its former self. The key variable appears to be 'Presence' – the degree to which a conscious entity interacts with a temporal anomaly. High Presence accelerates Decortication; low Presence slows it, but paradoxically, prolonged inactivity can also lead to a catastrophic cascade.

“To observe is to participate. To participate is to unravel.” – Archivist Silas Vance

Notable Anomalies

The Obsidian Mirror of Xylos

Designation: Xylos-789. Observed in Cycle 612. The Mirror exhibited a localized Decortication event centered on a single, perfectly rendered image of a flowering vine. Analysis suggests the vine was not native to any known temporal plane. Containment protocols were breached, resulting in a brief but intense surge of probabilistic instability. The artifact remains inert, but emits a faint, rhythmic pulse. Further study is deemed… precarious.

The Cartography of Silence

Designation: Null-347. Located within the ‘Grey Zone’ – a region of near-zero Presence. This object appears to be a multidimensional map, constantly shifting and reconfiguring. Attempts to interact with it have resulted in severe temporal disorientation and, in one instance, the complete erasure of Archivist Elara Thorne from the Chronarium’s records. Her disappearance is considered a prime example of the ‘Silent Cascade’ – a self-terminating Decortication event triggered by extended exposure.

The Chronometer of Recurrence

This device, constructed from solidified chroniton particles, attempts to predict the recurrence of Decortication events. However, its readings are notoriously unreliable, often fluctuating wildly and displaying temporal paradoxes. Currently, it indicates a 97% probability of a ‘Significant Recurrence’ occurring within the next 12 cycles. This projection is, of course, subject to revision.
