Dragonhood

The Echoes of Obsidian

The first whispers of Dragonhood aren’t found in grand prophecies or forged in the heat of battle. They reside in the stillness, in the resonance of forgotten places. Specifically, the Obsidian Cairns of Aethelgard. These structures, impossibly smooth and black, aren't merely rock. They are solidified memory, fragments of a time when dragons weren't apex predators but architects of reality, weaving threads of magic into the very fabric of existence. The air around them hums with a low frequency – a ‘dragon-song’ as the scholars call it – and those who linger too long report experiencing…shifts. Not physical, but perceptual. Colors deepen, shadows lengthen, and the mundane fades, revealing glimpses of impossible geometries and echoes of avian voices that shouldn't exist.

Legend claims the Cairns were built by the ‘Weavers,’ a race predating humanity, who understood the dragon’s innate connection to the ‘Chromatic Streams’ – rivers of raw magical energy. They used these Cairns to manipulate these streams, creating localized distortions of time and space. But the Weavers vanished, leaving behind only the Cairns and the unsettling knowledge that something immense and ancient still sleeps beneath Aethelgard.

The Chromatic Streams

The Chromatic Streams are not simply sources of magic; they are the dragon’s lifeblood, their very essence. Each stream corresponds to a fundamental aspect of existence: Ember (passion, destruction), Azure (knowledge, illusion), Viridian (growth, decay), and Umber (stability, dormancy). A dragon’s affinity with a particular stream dictates its abilities and temperament. However, the Streams are volatile, constantly shifting and reacting to the emotions and intentions of those nearby. A surge of fear can amplify the Ember Stream, unleashing destructive flames. A moment of profound contemplation can strengthen the Azure, granting the dragon access to forbidden knowledge.

There are whispers of ‘Chromatic Bleeds’ - points where the streams intersect with alarming intensity, creating localized zones of chaotic magic. These zones are incredibly dangerous, warping reality and driving creatures – including dragons – to madness. The most recent bleed was recorded near the Serpent’s Spine Mountains, a region already notorious for its unpredictable weather and territorial wyverns.

The Mark of the Shifting Scale

Not all who encounter Dragonhood are destined to become dragons. The ‘Mark of the Shifting Scale’ is a phenomenon – a subtle, iridescent shimmer that appears on the skin of individuals who are particularly receptive to the dragon’s influence. The mark isn't a sign of transformation; it's a resonance, a connection. Those bearing the Mark experience vivid dreams filled with aerial vistas, the scent of sulfur and ozone, and a primal longing for the open sky.

The Mark’s appearance is often linked to periods of intense emotional upheaval—a great loss, a profound discovery, or a moment of almost unbearable beauty. The intensity of the shimmer correlates directly to the individual’s potential. Some experience a faint, barely perceptible glow; others, a dazzling, almost painful radiance. The Shifting Scale is a burden as much as it is a gift; it demands constant vigilance, a deep understanding of one's own emotions, and a willingness to embrace the chaos that lies within.

There are rumors that the Mark can be intentionally triggered through prolonged exposure to Chromatic Streams, a dangerous and ultimately self-destructive practice.

The Keepers of the Flame

A secretive order known as the Keepers of the Flame guard the knowledge of Dragonhood, scattered across the continents. They aren’t dragon riders; they are scholars, mages, and warriors dedicated to understanding and containing the dragon’s power. The Keepers’ headquarters is located within the ruins of Old Lyra, a city swallowed by the Shifting Sands centuries ago. They believe that the dragons aren’t inherently malevolent, but are forces of nature, and their role is to maintain the balance between chaos and order.

The Keepers utilize a complex system of ‘Chromatic Resonance’ – a form of divination that allows them to detect and interpret the dragon-songs. They also employ ‘Scale-Weavers,’ individuals who can manipulate the Chromatic Streams through intricate rituals and enchantments. The Keepers are constantly battling against rogue dragon-seekers and those who would exploit the dragon’s power for selfish gain.

Recently, the Keepers have reported an increase in activity from a shadowy organization known as ‘The Obsidian Pact,’ who are attempting to harness the dragon-songs for nefarious purposes.
