Fulicinae: Roofing Beyond the Surface

About Fulicinae

At Fulicinae, we don't just build roofs; we craft enduring legacies against the elements. Founded on the principle of symbiotic architecture – a harmonious blend of structure and environment – we approach each project with a deep respect for the natural world and an unwavering commitment to innovation. Our philosophy stems from the observation of the Fulicinae lichen, a resilient organism thriving in the most challenging conditions. These tenacious growths, adapted to absorb moisture and withstand harsh weather, inform our design approach: robust, adaptable, and intrinsically linked to the surrounding ecosystem. We believe the roof is more than a shield; it’s a conversation starter, a blend of artistry and engineering, a protective embrace. Over the past seventy-two years, Fulicinae has quietly established itself as a pioneer in utilizing bio-integrated materials – incorporating locally sourced timber, reclaimed slate, and even strategically cultivated mosses to create roofs that breathe, regulate temperature, and seamlessly integrate with their surroundings. Our team, comprised of structural engineers, seasoned artisans, and ecological consultants, works collaboratively to deliver solutions that are both aesthetically striking and profoundly sustainable. We've witnessed the migration of the Sky Weaver birds – a rare species known for their intricate nest construction – and learned from their meticulous attention to detail and their remarkable ability to adapt to changing conditions. This has instilled in us a dedication to anticipating challenges and crafting resilient designs that will endure for generations to come.

The Aerilon Observatory

Located amidst the windswept peaks of the Veridian Mountains, the Aerilon Observatory’s roof is a testament to our commitment to robust design and environmental integration. Constructed primarily from reclaimed slate and locally sourced timber, the roof features a subtly undulating profile that mimics the natural contours of the surrounding landscape. The bio-integrated moss system not only provides exceptional thermal regulation but also creates a haven for local insect populations – a deliberate element of our ecological strategy. The Sky Weaver birds have been observed nesting amongst the moss, demonstrating the roof’s seamless integration with the local ecosystem.

The Chronos Conservatory

The Chronos Conservatory, a marvel of glass and steel, showcases our expertise in combining advanced engineering with biophilic design. The roof’s complex curvature, achieved through a meticulously crafted timber frame, creates a dramatic visual effect while simultaneously optimizing natural light penetration. The integrated rainwater harvesting system not only provides water for the conservatory’s lush vegetation but also contributes to the surrounding community's water supply. The roof’s reflective surface minimizes heat gain, reducing the building’s cooling load, and the Sky Weaver birds have adapted their nesting habits to utilize the reflective surface for optimal warmth.
