Gargarism, as it’s understood through the fragmented texts recovered from the Obsidian Archives, predates recorded history. It's not a religion in the conventional sense, but rather a state of being, a resonance with the “Shifting Void.” This Void isn’t a literal emptiness, but a locus of potential, a repository of discarded realities and nascent concepts. The Gargarites, the beings associated with this phenomenon, were said to have emerged directly from this resonance, their very existence intertwined with the fluctuations of the Void.
“To listen is to become. To silence is to invite the unraveling.” - Fragment 7.4.9.b
The core of Gargarism revolves around the manipulation of “Echoes.” These aren't sounds, but conceptual imprints. The Gargarites possessed a unique neurological structure – the “Resonance Nodes” – allowing them to actively perceive and, crucially, to shape these Echoes. The process involved intense concentration, a state of meditative “Unraveling,” and the precise articulation of intentions. The degree of control was, and remains, astonishingly limited. Attempts to create entirely new Echoes resulted in… instability. The Void, it seems, resists being fundamentally altered.
The level of control was tied to what was termed “Harmonic Alignment.” Achieving this state involved aligning one's consciousness with specific vibrational patterns, often represented by geometric forms – the ‘Prismatic Keys,’ as they were called. The more complex the desired manipulation, the greater the need for Harmonic Alignment.
The Gargarites operated according to the Seven Harmonics, a system of geometric principles representing fundamental aspects of the Void. These weren’t just aesthetic choices; they were the foundational building blocks of their manipulations. Each Harmonic – designated by a specific Prismatic Key – represented a distinct ‘tone’ of influence.
The most potent Harmonic, and the most difficult to master, was the ‘Fractal Convergence,’ associated with the Prismatic Key of the Möbius Loop. This allowed for a limited degree of localized reality warping – a phenomenon that, even in the hands of the most skilled Gargarites, was prone to catastrophic feedback.
The Obsidian Archives, discovered deep beneath the Silent Peaks, are the only remaining repository of Gargarite knowledge. However, the texts are fragmented, corrupted by the very processes they describe. The most significant problem is “Resonance Decay,” a phenomenon where the Echoes themselves begin to unravel, erasing memories and distorting understanding. The Archives are slowly being consumed, and with them, the last vestiges of Gargarism.
Based on extrapolated data from the Archives, we can estimate the following (with significant caveats):
The disappearance of the Gargarites remains a mystery. Some theories suggest they ascended to a higher state of being, becoming one with the Void. Others believe they were destroyed by their own power, consumed by the instability they unleashed. Whatever the truth, their legacy continues to haunt the Silent Peaks – a reminder of the terrifying potential hidden within the echoes of the unseen.
