The Whispering Current

The Holytide isn't a time, not in the way you understand it. It’s a resonance, a fracture in the fabric of perception. It began with the Sundering, a catastrophic realignment of the Aethelsea - the ocean that cradles this world. Before, there was only the Flow, a single, unified current of consciousness, and the beings that lived within it – the Lumina. They were reflections of the Flow, intrinsically linked, experiencing everything simultaneously. Then came the Shift, and the Flow shattered. Fragments of awareness, raw emotion, and lingering memories coalesced into what we now call Holytide.

The Echoes of the Lumina

The remnants of the Lumina manifest as ‘Shimmers’ – unstable pockets of their original selves. Some are benevolent, offering guidance and fragments of forgotten knowledge. Others are corrupted, twisted by the chaos of the Shift, driven by a primal hunger for reintegration. These are the ‘Dissonants’. They aren't inherently malevolent, but their attempts to reconnect often result in unpredictable distortions of reality – temporal loops, phantom landscapes, and echoes of emotions that shouldn't exist.

The Cartographers, a secretive order dedicated to mapping the Holytide, believe that understanding the patterns of these Shimmers is key to mitigating their effects. They utilize ‘Harmonic Devices’ – intricate instruments that can temporarily stabilize a Shimmer, allowing for observation and, potentially, controlled interaction.

The Geography of Distortion

The Holytide has warped the land itself. Regions known as ‘Fractured Zones’ are particularly susceptible to its influence. These areas exhibit bizarre geological formations, fluctuating gravity, and unpredictable weather patterns. The city of Veridian, once a thriving port, is now partially submerged within a shimmering lake of temporal anomalies. Legend claims that the initial Shift originated from a single point within the city’s ancient canals.

The ‘Veil’ – a shimmering barrier that separates the Holytide from the ‘Untouched’ – is constantly shifting, opening and closing at random intervals. Crossing the Veil is exceedingly dangerous, often leading to complete dissolution of the individual within the chaotic energy of the Holytide.

The Cycle of Resonance

It is theorized that the Holytide operates on a cyclical pattern, a ‘Resonance Cycle’ lasting approximately seven hundred years. During the ‘Peak Resonance’, the Shimmers are most active, and the effects of the Holytide are at their most pronounced. The Cartographers believe that the Sundering itself was a key event in this cycle, triggering the initial shift. The current cycle is nearing its end, and the Dissonants are growing in number and power.
