Introduction
This ledger chronicles the activities of the Cartographer's Guild, a body dedicated to the study and facilitation of trade along the perilous Obsidian Coast. It’s not a simple record of coin changing hands; it’s a tapestry woven with threads of negotiation, risk, and the occasional, unsettling discovery. The Guild believes that understanding the patterns of commerce is key to predicting disaster, and perhaps, even shaping it.
The Obsidian Coast
The Obsidian Coast is a region defined by its jagged black cliffs, perpetually shrouded in mist, and the strange, shimmering obsidian deposits that give it its name. The land is sparsely populated, inhabited primarily by the nomadic K’tharr tribes and isolated settlements clinging to the coastline. The Coast is rich in rare minerals – phosphorescent salts, heat-resistant alloys, and, most controversially, the ‘Dragon’s Tear’ – a solidified resin said to possess potent magical properties. These resources attract both legitimate traders and those less scrupulous. The weather is notoriously volatile, shifting with unsettling speed, and the currents are treacherous. Many ships have vanished without a trace, swallowed by the churning grey.
Key Players
Lord Valerius Thorne: A merchant prince known for his ruthlessness and vast fleet. He controls a significant portion of the trade in Dragon’s Tear. Rumored to employ shadow brokers. Kaelen “The Serpent” Voran: A K'tharr chieftain, renowned for his negotiation skills and mastery of the coastal currents. He demands a ‘tribute’ in exchange for safe passage. Sister Elara of the Silent Order: A scholar and cartographer, obsessed with deciphering the ‘songs’ of the obsidian, believing they hold the key to untold wealth.
Trade Routes
The primary route begins in Port Azure, a bustling trading hub in the Eastern Marches. From there, goods are shipped along the Serpent’s Spine – a treacherous channel – to the coastal settlements. The southern route leads to the Sunken City of Lyra, a site of constant danger and rumored treasures. The most perilous route, however, is the ‘Whisperwind Passage’ – a narrow channel known for its unpredictable storms and the unsettling presence of… something.
The Signet Society
The Signet Society is a clandestine organization dedicated to monitoring and influencing the flow of trade. It’s comprised of cartographers, scholars, and… individuals with unique skills. The Society's primary goal is to maintain stability – preventing runaway speculation, suppressing illicit trade, and, occasionally, eliminating threats to the established order. They operate from hidden chambers beneath the Cartographer’s Guild headquarters. Membership is… selective.
Chronicle Entries
17th Cycle, 3rd Bloom
Port Azure
A shipment of heat-resistant alloys destined for Lord Thorne arrived, accompanied by a K’tharr vessel. Negotiations were tense; Voran demanded an additional ‘tribute’ – a young male, supposedly for ‘ceremonial purposes’. Thorne, predictably, refused. The K’tharr departed without the tribute, but not before unleashing a minor storm upon Thorne’s fleet.
18th Cycle, 5th Harvest
The Whispering Cliffs
Sister Elara returned from the Whispering Cliffs, raving about ‘resonances’ and ‘patterns’ within the obsidian. She claimed to have located a vein of Dragon’s Tear of unparalleled purity. She’s requested a large expedition – and a significant portion of the Guild’s resources. The Signet Society is expressing considerable skepticism.
19th Cycle, 1st Frost
The Serpent’s Spine
A merchant vessel, the ‘Sea Serpent’, disappeared. No wreckage was found. Rumors persist of a ‘shadow current’ – a phenomenon the Signet Society actively monitors. Forensic analysis of the currents suggests a localized distortion, possibly linked to magical interference.
