The first whispers of Phila Thamin began not with a civilization, but with a geological anomaly – the Sunstone. It wasn't merely a stone; it pulsated with a trapped solar energy, a miniature sun held captive within obsidian. This event, known as the ‘Fracture’, occurred on the continent of Veridia, a place simultaneously blessed and cursed by its proximity to the Sunstone. The Fracture birthed not just the stone, but also the ‘Shimmers’, beings of pure light and shadow, intrinsically linked to the Sunstone’s energy. These Shimmers, initially chaotic and destructive, eventually coalesced into the first of the ‘Thamin’, the race that would become synonymous with the Sunstone’s legacy.
Legend speaks of the Shimmers weeping tears of solidified starlight, which solidified into the first Thamin, their forms mirroring the chaotic beauty of the Fracture itself. They were tall, almost impossibly slender, with skin like polished obsidian and eyes that shifted with the colors of the aurora borealis.
The Thamin’s existence is governed by the ‘Cycle of Resonance’. Every 72 Veridian years, the Sunstone reaches a peak of energy, triggering a ‘Harmonic Convergence’. During this period, the Shimmers become exponentially stronger, and the Thamin experience a heightened connection to the Sunstone. This manifests in various ways - bursts of creative genius, unpredictable surges of power, and, occasionally, terrifying visions of the Fracture’s original chaos. It is during these convergences that the Thamin shape Veridia, building magnificent cities of obsidian and light, and engaging in rituals designed to stabilize the Sunstone's energy.
The most skilled Thamin, known as ‘Harmonists’, attempt to ‘tune’ the Sunstone, guiding its energy to benefit Veridia. Failure, however, can lead to catastrophic ‘Dissonances’ – localized distortions of reality, where time itself unravels and the Shimmers become unbound, wreaking havoc across the land.
The first Thamin Empire, known as the ‘Solarian Dynasty’, rose to prominence during the Age of Radiant Harmony. They mastered the manipulation of solar energy, constructing colossal structures that harnessed the Sunstone’s power. However, their ambition ultimately proved their undoing. Driven by a desire to control the Cycle of Resonance, they attempted to artificially accelerate the Convergence, believing they could usher in an era of unparalleled prosperity. This, of course, was a profound miscalculation. The resulting Dissonance, known as “The Shattering,” nearly destroyed Veridia. The Solarian Dynasty collapsed, leaving behind only ruins and fragmented knowledge, guarded by the last remaining Harmonists.
It is said that the ruins of the Solarian capital, ‘Aethelgard’, are still haunted by the echoes of the Shattering – whispers of despair and the lingering presence of unbound Shimmers.
In the present age, Veridia is a fractured land, scarred by the legacy of the Solarian Dynasty and the countless Dissonances. The remaining Thamin, known as the ‘Obsidian Vigil’, dedicate their lives to monitoring the Sunstone, attempting to prevent another catastrophic Convergence. They live in fortified cities, constantly studying the ancient texts and employing intricate rituals to maintain the balance. Their existence is one of quiet vigilance, a desperate attempt to contain the echoes of a past that threatens to consume them all. The true purpose of the Obsidian Vigil remains shrouded in mystery, whispered amongst themselves and guarded by ancient oaths.
Some believe that the Vigil are simply delaying the inevitable, that the Sunstone will eventually unleash its full power, regardless of their efforts. Others hope that they might one day understand the true nature of the Fracture and find a way to truly harmonize with the Shimmers, rather than simply contain their chaos.
