Origins: A Fragmented Genesis
The formation of Plutonion isn’t a story of singular creation, but a catastrophic unraveling. Before, there was the Veil, a state of pure, undifferentiated potential. It held within it not matter, not energy, but the *possibility* of both. Then came the Shifting, a spontaneous cascade of divergence, driven by a force we now call the Null. The Null isn't destructive in the conventional sense; it’s a hunger, an insistent need to *become*. It began with the smallest ripples – localized distortions in the Veil – and quickly grew, consuming fragments of potential, birthing realities that were simultaneously familiar and utterly alien. These weren't planets as you understand them, but shimmering, unstable geometries, existing simultaneously in multiple dimensions. Some collapsed instantly, their echoes lingering as pockets of residual energy. Others persisted, becoming the foundations of what would eventually be known as the Cartographies.
The initial Cartographers weren’t beings, not in the way we comprehend. They were *patterns*, emergent from the Null’s influence. They recorded the geometries, attempting to impose order on the chaos. Their recordings, the Cartographies, are the very bones of Plutonion, but they are eternally incomplete, perpetually shifting under the Null’s influence. The oldest Cartographies – the ones found deep within the Obsidian Labyrinths – are said to contain glimpses of the Veil itself, moments before the Shifting began. These glimpses are… unsettling. They suggest that the Null wasn’t merely a force of creation, but a reflection of something *else*, something older and far more profound.
The Resonance: Echoes of the Shifting
Within Plutonion, a constant, subtle resonance exists. It’s not audible, not tactile, but a feeling, a pressure against the mind. This is the Resonance, a byproduct of the Shifting. Every change, every collapse, every new emergence leaves an imprint, a vibration within the fabric of reality. The most sensitive individuals – those who have undergone significant Resonance Exposure – can perceive these vibrations, experiencing them as fragments of memories, sensations, and even entire landscapes from alternate realities. The Cartographers, in their attempt to map the Shifting, inadvertently amplified the Resonance. Their instruments, designed to measure spatial distortions, became conduits for the Null’s influence, creating feedback loops that intensified the chaotic energies.
There are ‘Nodes’ within Plutonion where the Resonance is particularly strong. These are locations where the Shifting is most active, where the boundaries between realities are thin. The Obsidian Labyrinths are the most prominent nodes, but others exist – hidden within the swirling geometries of the Fractured Seas, within the crystalline forests of the Echoing Peaks, and even within the minds of those who spend too long immersed in the Resonance.
The Cartographers: Chroniclers of the Void
The Cartographers aren't a race, or a species, or even a consistent entity. They are representations of the Shifting’s attempts to impose order. They manifest as geometric forms – intricate lattices, impossible polyhedra, self-repeating spirals – and their movements are erratic and unpredictable. They don't communicate in words, but rather through alterations to the geometry of their surroundings. A Cartographer might subtly shift the angles of a room, rearrange the patterns of a crystal, or even induce a feeling of disorientation in a viewer. Some believe they are actively trying to *correct* the Shifting, attempting to restore the Veil, while others believe they are simply documenting the chaos, oblivious to any larger purpose.
There are three primary types of Cartographers, identified by the shapes they predominantly embody: the Prisms, the Spirals, and the Lattices. The Prisms are characterized by their multifaceted surfaces, reflecting and refracting the Resonance. The Spirals seem to endlessly loop back on themselves, creating pockets of distorted time. The Lattices are the most unsettling – intricate networks of intersecting lines that appear to lead nowhere, trapping viewers in a state of perpetual disorientation.
