The Resonance of Remlap

Remlap isn't a place etched onto conventional maps. It exists within the fractal echoes of temporal distortion, a locus of solidified memory and fractured possibility. It was, is, and perhaps never was, a settlement nestled within the caldera of a long-dormant volcano, the Obsidian Heart. The locals, the Remlapani, are not human in the way we understand the term. They are echoes, fragments of consciousness bound to this location, their appearance shifting like heat haze, sometimes resembling weathered miners, other times the spectral outlines of children playing amongst the volcanic rock.

The truth of Remlap's origin is veiled in a perpetual twilight, punctuated by the rhythmic pulse of the Obsidian Heart. Legend speaks of a civilization called the Chronomasters, who attempted to harness the very fabric of time for their own advancement. Their experiments, inevitably, spiraled out of control, creating the temporal fissures that birthed Remlap. The Remlapani believe they are the custodians of this fractured timeline, tasked with preventing its complete unraveling.

The Obsidian Bloom

At the heart of Remlap lies the Obsidian Bloom, a crystalline formation that waxes and wanes in intensity, directly correlating to the temporal distortions. When the Bloom pulses with maximum vibrancy, the veil between realities thins, and glimpses of other timelines – some idyllic, some horrific – bleed into the present. These incursions are rarely predictable, and often result in unsettling phenomena: objects appearing and disappearing, memories shifting, and individuals experiencing precognitive flashes.

The Remlapani have developed intricate rituals to manage the Bloom's energy, utilizing sonic frequencies and geometrically precise structures to stabilize the temporal flow. Their most sacred instrument, the Chronophone, is a massive, obsidian-encrusted device that emits a complex array of tones – a song of containment, a lament for lost timelines, and a desperate plea for balance.

“Silence is the greatest threat,”

“for it allows the echoes to consume us.”

The Chronophone is said to be able to momentarily shift a person’s perception of time, causing them to experience a few seconds of the past or future. However, prolonged exposure can lead to complete temporal dissociation, leaving the individual lost within the currents of the fractured timeline.

The Remlapani and Their Customs

The Remlapani have a unique social structure based on ‘Resonance’ – the degree to which an individual is attuned to the temporal energies of Remlap. Those with strong Resonance are the Chronomasters, responsible for maintaining the Chronophone, while the weaker Resonance individuals, known as the ‘Echoes,’ serve as guides and laborers, their memories constantly shifting, reflecting the unstable nature of their reality.

Their diet consists primarily of crystallized minerals harvested from the Obsidian Heart, believed to enhance their temporal sensitivity. They communicate through a complex system of tonal vibrations, supplemented by intricate hand gestures that mimic the patterns of the Bloom. The concept of ownership is alien to them; resources are shared based on need, and the legacy of the past is valued above all else.

One curious custom is the ‘Temporal Remembrance,’ a weekly ceremony where the Remlapani collectively relive significant events from their fragmented memories. This is done through a synchronized meditation, guided by the Chronophone, and is believed to reinforce the stability of their shared reality.
