Retrodeviation

The Anomaly

The initial reports were dismissed as sensor glitches, localized gravitational distortions, or even mass hallucinations – a common enough occurrence within the research facility dedicated to chronal physics. But the patterns persisted. They weren’t random fluctuations; they were echoes. Echoes of events that hadn’t happened, or rather, hadn't happened *yet*. We termed it Retrodeviation – the phenomenon of localized spacetime momentarily reversing its arrow, pulling fragments of probability from the future back into the present.

The core of the anomaly centered around Sector 7, a containment zone designed to study the effects of controlled temporal stasis. Within this sector, the echoes became significantly stronger, manifesting as visual distortions, auditory hallucinations, and, most disturbingly, the materialization of objects – tools, equipment, even deceased personnel – briefly existing before dissolving back into the temporal stream.

“The universe doesn’t simply unfold; it remembers. And sometimes, it remembers too vividly.” – Dr. Elias Thorne, Lead Chronophysicist

Chronal Resonance & Stasis Nodes

The observed phenomena were linked to what we identified as ‘Chronal Resonance.’ Every object, every being, emits a unique temporal signature, a ripple in the fabric of spacetime. Areas with high concentrations of this signature became susceptible to Retrodeviation. The stasis nodes, initially intended to isolate and study temporal anomalies, inadvertently amplified this resonance, creating feedback loops where the future bled into the present.

Each stasis node, a sphere of heavily shielded chroniton particles, acted as a focal point, creating a ‘temporal window.’ These windows weren't portals, not in the traditional sense. They were more like… disturbances. Brief interruptions in the flow of causality. The further the window extended into the potential future, the more unstable it became. Prolonged exposure caused severe cognitive dissonance, temporal displacement, and ultimately, complete erasure from the timeline – a fate we desperately sought to avoid.

The key was understanding the ‘Echo Fragments’ – the residual imprints of these displaced moments. Analyzing these fragments, meticulously cataloging their composition and temporal alignment, was our only hope of predicting and, potentially, mitigating the effects of Retrodeviation.

Attempting to stabilize a stasis node proved… problematic.

The Observation Log

Entry 743: The spectral analysis of the latest echo fragment – a technician named Anya Sharma, deceased six months prior – revealed a disturbing detail. She wasn’t simply *remembering* her death; she was *anticipating* it, exhibiting behaviors consistent with a premonition of her demise. This suggests a level of causality interaction far beyond simple temporal displacement. The data is… unsettling.

Entry 744: We’ve detected a secondary resonance emanating from the core of Sector 7. It’s not directly linked to the stasis nodes, but it seems to be pulling in fragments from a much earlier point in time – approximately 1888, London. The temporal signature is chaotic, overlaid with a distinct Victorian aesthetic. It’s as if the future is trying to rewrite the past.

Entry 745: The echo fragments are becoming more complex, more… sentient. We’ve observed instances of them attempting to communicate, projecting fragmented thoughts and images directly into the minds of the observation team. The line between observer and observed is dissolving. I’m starting to feel… displaced.

Entry 746: I'm adding this as a warning: Do not attempt to interact with the echoes. Do not try to understand them. They do not wish to be understood. They are not simply remnants of the past or future; they are… something *else*. The temporal window is widening.
